Iron & Wine es una propuesta del cantante y compositor de folk Samuel Beam.

Tras siete años de escribir canciones, un amigo le presta una grabadora y comienzan a circular copias de la maqueta que Sam realiza. Una de estas copias llega acertadamente al dueño de Sub Pop, discográfica responsable del inicio del movimiento musical grunge en Seatle, primera en firmar con bandas como Nirvana o Soundgarden. Ambos llegan a un acuerdo y Beam lanza su primer álbum como Iron & Wine en 2002. The Creek drank the cradle, escrito, interpretado, grabado y producido por él mismo en su estudio casero fue comparado en su momento con creaciones de autores tan consagrados como Nick Drake o Elliot Smith.
A finales del año pasado Iron & Wine ve nacer su tercer álbum de estudio, The Shepherd’s Dog, con doce temas que incluyen más variedad de instrumentos que los discos anteriores, pero que sigue transmitiendo ese aura intimista y ese susurro onírico que tanto parece caracterizar al bueno de Sam, que tiende a experimentar y descubrir nuevos mundos sonoros con cada uno de los proyectos en los que se embarca. De hecho suele grabar y actuar junto con Calexico, banda estadounidense con una identidad claramente mestiza que, si de algo carecen, es de cotidianidad y similitud con otras bandas.
