Requiem por un sueño es una de las mejores películas que inauguraron el actual siglo cinematográfico. Después de un debut importante con Pí, en la que Darren Aronofsky demostró su ingeniosa y muy visual forma de narrar, en esta segunda incursión hizo saber que, de una forma más o menos caótica, podía llegar a transmitir al espectador lo que quisiera: dolor, frustración, angustia, ira… Pero mientras que Pí hacía gala de todo esto de una forma desordenada y mediante una historia que en algunos momentos no llegaba a tener explicación (a lo mejor no había por qué buscarla), en Requiem por un sueño mezcla esta facilidad de conectar con las sensaciones más crudas, con una historia que está, desde el principio, perfectamente hilada y basada en personajes que, desgraciadamente, podemos encontrar en cualquier ciudad, de cualquier país, en el que como modelo se haya escogido un sistema capitalista capaz de provocar cierta sensación de desasosiego y de inseguridad entre los ciudadanos que luchan por hacerse un hueco en ella. De esta manera, los personajes acaban metidos en un agujero negro motivado por las ansias de conseguir algunas de las más comunes aspiraciones hacia las que trepa el ser humano de hoy en día, como son el dinero y el reconocimiento público. La historia está basada en una novela de Hubert Selby Jr. y las interpretaciones principales las llevan a cabo Jennifer Connelly, Jared Leto y Ellen Burstin. Por su parte, Aronofsky consigue, sino la mejor, una de sus mejores obras.
